The birth control discussion went over as well as a bucket of ice-cold water being dumped on the bed would have. Ciara isn’t moving away from me or saying anything negative, but I sense the gap that is growing between us. I don’t want emotional or physical distance from this wonderful woman, but I sense that I need to tread carefully to keep from scaring her off.

It was irresponsible of me not to have the safe-sex talk with Ciara before making love with her, but I have never wanted a woman like I crave her. Seeing her naked in my bed sent my body into an uncontrollable frenzy of desire.

Our physical intimacy and compatibility are off-the-charts fantastic, but common sense tells me that this sensitive, caring woman will want a deep emotional connection as well. Rather than letting her pull away from me, I dive in with both feet.

“Fires aren’t usually as personal for me as the one we battled yesterday. I was so frightened that you might be injured. I haven’t been that scared since the fire that destroyed my childhood home.” I try to keep the emotion out of my tone, but it comes through, despite my best effort.

As I had suspected, Ciara’s compassionate streak takes over. Her expression is soft and concerned when she asks, “Was any of your family hurt?”

“No, we got really lucky, and we all escaped with only minor injuries, but our house burned to the ground. It was then that I realized the immense power of the flames because they took everything from us––except each other.”

I know my voice sounds faraway as I speak, but it’s comforting to talk about it with someone who truly seems to care and understand. It’s been years since I allowed myself to discuss or even think about that horrific night.

“It’s almost as if my childhood before the fire ceased to exist, other than fading memories. We lost all of our pictures and videos, my Little League trophies, the scrapbook my mom made from when I was a baby. Everything was just gone.”

“How awful,” Ciara murmurs as she squeezes her arms together to give me a reassuring hug.

“That was the day I decided I wanted to be a firefighter. Those brave men raced to the scene and did everything in their power to save us and our home. It was too late for the structure, but they got us all out––including my dog, Snuggles, who hid under the bed in my room and had to be coaxed out by one of the firemen.”

“Those firefighters saved Snuggles? No wonder they inspired you so much.” The smile the lovely woman gives me is genuine as she imagines the snapshot of my childhood that I’m painting for her with my words.

“Yes, Snuggles is no longer with us, but he lived many more happy years after that fateful day, thanks to the brave man that refused to leave him behind. That firefighter’s name is Mike Montgomery, and he’s now the chief of the station where I work.
